John Matthew Sobrato

John is part of the fourth generation of Sobrato family members working within Silicon Valley and is currently the Director of Impact and Learning. Serving in a cross-functional capacity, he supports all Sobrato Philanthropies’ program areas through monitoring, evaluation, and learning – seeking to drive insights and better understand the organization’s impact within the world without burdening grantee partners or communities. He is deeply committed to continuing the Sobrato family’s philanthropic leadership as well as increasing equity and access to opportunities for communities throughout the Bay Area and beyond.

Before joining Sobrato Philanthropies in the spring of 2022, John worked as a classroom teacher and an administrator at high schools in East Side San Jose for 10 years. After transitioning out of a role focused on education, John served on several nonprofit Boards, including the Sobrato Philanthropies Board, the Board of the Foundation for Hispanic Education, the Ignatian Center Advisory Board at Santa Clara University, and the Board Chair role for the SEAL Organization. John also serves as a Trustee for the Latino Education Advancement Fund (LEAF). He holds a B.S. from Santa Clara University in both History and Political Science.

Together with his wife, Andie, John leads a personal giving practice dedicated to supporting equity, opportunity, and well-being for all, with a focus on economic, social, and racial justice; reproductive rights and justice; and education and access. Grounded in a trust-based approach, John and Andie work closely with community partners and hope to inspire the next generation of philanthropists, both within the Sobrato family and beyond.
