Roots Community Health: Community Empowerment, Impact and Innovation

Founded in Oakland, California, Sobrato Philanthropy grantee, Roots Community Health (Roots), aims to empower individuals affected by systemic inequities and poverty. Through a comprehensive range of services including medical and behavioral health care, health navigation, workforce development, housing support, outreach, and advocacy, Roots addresses critical needs for our community.

Observing the lack of medical access for men, founder Noha Aboelata, MD, and a Nurse Practitioner delivered care on-site at various re-entry programs, substance abuse centers, and fatherhood initiatives. This approach ensured care was provided at the right time and place, while also enrolling patients in additional beneficial programs and services. As demand grew, Roots expanded, establishing clinics and employing a team reflective of the diverse community it serves. This approach enhances empathy and effectiveness, with navigators not only guiding individuals to resources but physically accompanying them, ensuring they receive necessary support.

Recognizing that medical care alone is insufficient without addressing broader social issues, Roots has diversified its offerings. They engage with barbershops and other community hubs to train locals in health promotion, reaching more than 75 professionals. Additionally, Roots operates social enterprises including a print shop, soap factory, and candle shop, offering job training and stipends to formerly incarcerated individuals, many of whom transition into navigational roles.

Addressing specific community needs, Roots launched the Doula program to support Black women during pregnancy, significantly improving birth outcomes. They also prioritize mental health, actively combating stigma through media campaigns and expanding resources online. Currently, Roots is expanding its impact with initiatives like a youth wellness center in East Oakland and a hydroponic garden in San Jose, addressing food insecurity and promoting sustainable agriculture.

Alma Burrell, Chief Administrative Officer at Roots, emphasized the importance of organizations like Sobrato: “We certainly need them more than ever now.
