Californians Together
Last year, Californians Together launched the Multilingual Education for All campaign, a ten-year statewide effort to make multilingualism a defining feature of California’s P-12 education system. The campaign is designed to build public will, strengthen field capacity, and advance the policies and conditions needed to ensure that all students have access to opportunities to develop multilingualism and biliteracy.
With nearly 200 languages spoken in homes across California, Californians Together recognizes linguistic and cultural diversity as one of the state’s greatest assets. The Multilingual Education for All campaign calls for a systems shift: one in which multilingualism is affirmed, developed, and integrated into the educational experience of every student.
Through the campaign, Californians Together is bringing together educators, families, advocates, researchers, district and county leaders, community partners, and statewide organizations to shape a long-term vision for multilingual education. Early campaign efforts have focused on building shared understanding, developing guiding principles, engaging partners across the state, and identifying the system changes needed to expand access to multilingual and biliteracy opportunities.
The campaign also connects directly to Californians Together’s broader policy priorities, including strengthening the bilingual educator pipeline, supporting more equitable reclassification policies for English learners, advancing the California English Learner Roadmap, and ensuring that multilingual learners have access to high-quality instruction and comprehensive English language development.
Support from Sobrato Philanthropies has empowered Californians Together to sustain the advocacy, coalition-building, leadership development, and field engagement needed to move this vision forward. With this support, Californians Together is continuing to build a statewide movement that positions multilingualism as central to education equity, academic success, and preparation for a multilingual, multicultural world.
Looking ahead, Californians Together will continue working with partners across California to deepen public understanding, elevate district and community leadership, develop resources for the field, and advance a long-term policy agenda for Multilingual Education for All.
Through this campaign, Californians Together is working toward a future where every student’s language, culture, and identity are recognized as assets and where every student has the opportunity to become multilingual.
